The Surrey Children's Choir, along with its youth and adults choirs, invites singers - boys, girls and adults, aged 6-86 to audition for its 22nd season!

Oh Canada!

The Surrey Children’s Choir’s 26^th season has flown by, and will go out with a bang this Sunday, at the Surrey Arts Centre, when the “choir family” presents “Oh Canada!” a celebration of songs written and arranged by Canadian composers.

The first half of the concert will see formal sets performed by the Junior and Intermediate training choirs, the Chamber Choir, the Youth Chorus, and the Surrey Children’s Choir ‘Senior Choir’.  Audience members will surely delight in hearing favourite folk songs such as “Away From the Roll of the Sea”, “Out on the Mira” and “Blooming Bright Star of Belle Isle”, to name a few.

The choreographed numbers of the second half are sure to entertain - what’s not to love about log-drivers, tango dancers and French-Canadian peasants? The second half will also feature 10 year chorister Robert McMorran-Rodgers as Anne of Green Gables, and 10 year chorister Kyra Borland-Walker and 20 year chorister Aaron Schollen performing “Indian Love Call” from the operetta “Rose-Marie”. 

The finale will see all 5 choirs in the SCC family joining together in song.

Trial By Jury

On Saturday, April 27th at First United Church in White Rock, join the SCC family as they present Gilbert&Sullivan's "Trial By Jury", and other british musical favourites!

The Surrey Youth Chorus and Surrey Adult Community Chorus (with the Children's Choir) have been preparing for months, and are very excited to stage our first ever "G&S" show.  Starring Stephanie Schollen, Aaron Schollen, Kirstin Hain, David Johnston, Danica Kell and Jerret Schwartz, this farcical production transports the audience to the "hall of justice" where Edwin, sued by Angelina, is judged for his breach of marriage.  You'll never guess the judge's sentence.

Before the main affair, the first half of the show features all 3 choirs, joined also by the Chamber Choir, staging fully choreographed numbers from musicals "Les Miserables", "Cats", "Oliver!" and "My Fair Lady", along with tunes from H.M.S Pinafore and the Mikado.

Highlight include the Chamber Choir's first foray into tap-dancing, an all-male dance number and several fabulous solo performances including those by 10-year choristers Kyra Borland-Walker and Roberta McMorran-Rodgers, and 20 year'er Aaron Schollen.

Sure to be show that will have you laughing days later, "Trial By Jury" is not to be missed!

Start the holidays right with the SCC

Join us December 1st as we kick off the holiday season in the only way it should be done; with friends, family and beautiful choral music. Our annual Christmas concert is sure to be an entertaining evening with old favorites and new. Get into the holiday spirit and enjoy an evening of music with the Surrey Children's Choir!

Back to School...Back to Singing!

While everyone is sad to see the summer go, September also marks the return of choir!! This month, we  start up our 21st season.  

The Senior Choir heads to Timberline Ranch this weekend for their annual retreat.  Its such a great way to start off the season. Old choir buddies get to catch up, and newbies get a chance to meet the people they'll be singing with for the rest of the year, and have a chance to see what the SCC is all about!  Along with getting a leg up on the repertoire for the 1st choir semester, the singers also have lots of fun on retreat, enjoying the activities Timberline offers (Horses, and climbing, and swimming- oh my!), and enjoying each others' company!

After the weekend away at Timberline, the Chamber Choir is very excited to be joining SCC alum Elicia Mackenzie at Blue Frog Studio in White Rock to record back-ups for her upcoming Christmas CD.  Elicia sang with the choir back when it was still a fairly new thing in the White Rock/South Surrey community, and went on to win Andrew Lloyd Webber's reality TV competition "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria", meaning she was cast in the role of Maria in Toronto's revival of "The Sound of Music"!  It will be great to collaborate with Elicia next week.

Regular rehearsals start for the Senior, Chamber and Youth choirs on Wednesday, September 12th, with the Junior and Intermediate Training Choirs beginning rehearsals the following week,  on Wednesday, September 19th.

Bumming out that choir is over for the summer?  Have no fear- S.C.A.T camp is here!

S.C.A.T Camps offers an exciting opportunity for young singers, dancers, actors and artists (aged 8-18) to come together and create a semi-staged production after two fun-filled weeks of training in musicianship, dance, choreography, set production and musical theatre.

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

At the end of these 2 weeks, S.C.A.T participants stage a show centred on a theme that includes songs from the jazz, classical, folk, and Broadway genres, among others.  "Campers" will also participate in set painting and the creation of props and costumes. 

Participants will be given the opportunity to audition for vocal, dance or acting solo parts to be performed as part of the final show, following a potluck dinner for family and friends.

The camp will take place 9AM-3PM,  Monday-Friday from July 16th - July 27th at First United Church in White Rock.

The 2012 S.C.A.T Camp Faculty is:

Stephen Horning, B.Mus, Ed. Dip. graduated from the University of Victoria in 1978, majoring in composition, piano, and choral studies.  Stephen taught twelve years in the Campbell River School District, where he founded the Campbell River Children's Choir.  Stephen moved to the lower lainland in 1989 to teach in the Surrey School District.  In 1992, he founded the Surrey Children's Choir.  Stephen was recipient of the 1999 Willan Award for Outstanding Service to the British Columbia Choral Federation.  In 2008, Stephen received the Surrey Civic Treasure Award for the his contribution to Arts in Surrey.

Carol Coulson attended Dalhousie University, UBC, and received a Master degree from the University of Lublin, Poland, in Folk dance and Choreography.  She performed with the Halifax Theatre Ballet Company and the New York City Ballet under George Balanchine.  Carol has produced, directed, and choreographed many spectacular events in Vancouver, such as the Opening Ceremonies of Expo '86, the Papal visit, and two Grey Cup half-time shows.  Carol is also an accomplished painter and the resident choreographer with the Surrey Children's Choir.

Katie Tennant-Horning is a graduate of Emily Carr University of Art and Design.  She has years of experience working with children and is currently enrolled at UBC in the teacher training program.

Ewa Lajlo has studied at the National School of Art, Zielona Gora, Poland and is currently enrolled in the Fine Arts Program at Langara College in Vancouver.

Danica Kell is a recent UBC graduate and current program manager for the Surrey Children's Choir.  She has over 16 years of choral singing experience and has worked as a musical summer camp assistant for the BC Choral Federation.

Carmina Burana at the Surrey Arts Centre

In just over a week's time, the Surrey Children's Choir, Surrey Chamber Choir, Surrey Youth Chorus and Surrey Adult Community Chorus will mount the main stage at the Surrey Arts Centre to present their 20th anniversary season Spring Concert.

The choirs have been working on Carl Orff's masterpiece since November and are incredibly excited to stage it.  The first half of the show also promises to be an exciting one, rounded out by Paul Halley's "Untravelled Worlds" and "Freedom Trilogy", and with performances of pieces from the Dominican Republic, Poland and commissioned piece "Say the Names" by Vancouver composer David MacIntyre.
